Oakham Castle

Oakham was today’s Anglo-Saxon settlement before the Norman invasion and was originally owned by Queen Edith, the widow of Edward the Confessor. To dominate this settlement, the first fortress was built around 1075 – a country and wooden castle. At the time of the publication of the Domesday Book (1086), the house was owned by King William, but passed to Henry de Beaumont, Earl of Warwick, who exchanged it with Henry I for Sutton in Warwickshire.
